Luke Boldabhai discusses how the sale was the perfect opportunity for young and first-time collectors

Cheffins’ much-anticipated bi-annual Affordable Art Sale ran from 4th – 21st July, offering over 230 original works from private collections across the UK. With a broad selection of paintings, drawings and prints, all available at accessible price points, the sale presented a unique opportunity for new and younger buyers to begin or build their art collections.

Lowry print sold for £600

Among the standout lots were a hand-signed print by L. S. Lowry (£600 hammer), two oils by Simeon Stafford (£900 hammer), a 19th century portrait of a young boy (£550 hammer) and an oil by Eric Thorpe (£440 hammer) which attracted strong bidding and underscored the continued appeal of quality, decorative works at realistic prices.

We’re seeing a growing number of private buyers turning to auctions in search of art that not only enhances their interiors but also reflects their individual style. In contrast to mass-produced prints from online retailers, these one-off pieces offer originality, character, and a personal story, without the premium price tag.

As sustainability and conscious purchasing become increasingly important, many buyers are drawn to the idea of owning something unique and preloved. Our Affordable Art Sale is a celebration of that ethos, offering distinctive, characterful works that elevate an interior and stand apart from generic, mass-market decoration.

Eric Thorpe oil sold for £440

This year’s sale attracted 230 enthusiastic bidders, with strong interest in works by notable artists including Henry Tanworth Wells, Samuel Bough, William Lakin Turner, Michael B. Edwards, John Aldridge, Claude Muncaster and Peter Samuelson. With prices ranging from just £50 to £1,000, the sale was an accessible entry point into the world of art collecting and a great chance to acquire something truly special.

We look forward to welcoming even more first-time buyers and seasoned collectors at our next Affordable Art Sale, coming at the end of the year.
