There is a wonderful album of topographical views painted by the itinerant artist Augustus Burnett-Stuart (1848-1898) who travelled extensively in Europe, The Near and Far East as well as India throughout the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s is to be included in The Fine Sale on the 26th and 27th March. Burnett-Stuart’s work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London; The Glasgow Institute, The Walker Art Gallery and The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. As fresh in colour as the day they were painted, the album comprises 72 views mainly of his travels around India in the 1880s as well as further views of China and the Far East.

Of late there seems to be increasing interest in travel albums of this nature and with the strength of the Indian economy, we are seeing a resurgence in demand for views of the sub-continent from both Indian and European collectors.  Works of this nature are now rising in price due to their rarity and are now achieving well into the thousands at auction. The leading travel artists in this field include Thomas and William Daniell, of which we have a small group of sketches included in the sale also.

The Burnett-Stuart album is completely fresh to the market, having come by direct decent from Burnett Stuart’s personal collection to the current owner.

It carries an estimate of £5,000 - £7,000.
