10/09/2025 Furniture, Carpets & Rugs
Nicolas Martineau, Valuer at Cheffins has given us his shopping list of the best of the best items in the furniture section of the upcoming Fine Sale. Including over 750 lots in total, this auction includes a wide range of antiques, artwork and collectors’ items from varying periods. Many of the pieces on offer have come from private houses from across the country, and are fresh to the market, having been held in personal collections for centuries.
Lot 495 - A giltwood scroll frame wall mirror, mid-19th century, estimate £1,000 - £2,000
Provenance:
Property from the Ross Estate, Brookside House, Ascot
“This wonderful piece has really caught my eye this month and is a real must-have for anyone looking to create traditional Regency-style interiors. I’ve always been a sucker for large grand giltwood mirrors that look good over a fireplace in a Drawing Room or Dining Room and this one is no exception.”
Lot 571
A pair of George III mahogany dining room urns and pedestals, estimate £2,000 - £4,000
Provenance:
Sir Edward Allan Greene, M.C. 3rd Bt. (1882-1966), Wickham House, Newbury, Berkshire,
Thence by descent to the present owner, Fairfield House, Upavon, Wiltshire
“You don’t often come across these rather grand Dining Room urns on pedestals coming up for sale at auction and these would be the pièce de resistance to any Georgian country house dining room.”
Lot 613
A Regency satinwood bowfront chest, estimate £400 - £600
“Regency bow fronted chests of drawers are commonplace characters in auction rooms up and down the county but this fine and unusual example in satinwood with inlayed line ebony has a real air of sophistication about it and certainly a cut above the rest.”
Lot 700
A set of four cut glass decanters and stoppers, late 19th century, estimate £200-400
Provenance:
Sir Edward Allan Greene, M.C. 3rd Bt. (1882-1966), Wickham House, Newbury, Berkshire,
Thence by descent to the present owner, Fairfield House, Upavon, Wiltshire
“This very smart set of decanters have a timeless quality about their design and despite having been crafted in the 19th century continue to look as relevant and stylish now as the day they were made.”
Lot 701
A late Victorian ebonised and gilt two tier étagère by Howard & Sons, estimate £400-600
Provenance:
Sir Edward Allan Greene, M.C. 3rd Bt. (1882-1966), Wickham House, Newbury, Berkshire,
Thence by descent to the present owner, Fairfield House, Upavon, Wiltshire
“Country House furniture made by Howard & Sons has an enduring fashionability about it, but this rather unusual étagère by the firm is not something that I have ever come across before. Beautifully made and extremely functional it screams quality with each spindle in the galleries appearing to have been individually gilded.”
