Captain George Harnage and the Hurricane of St. Thomas’s Harbour, West Indies 1819

‘View of the Town and Harbour of St. Thomas, West Indies, Taken from an Eminence near the Castle built by the notorious Buccaneer called Blackbeard, pub. Nov.1 1820 for W.J. Lord at the Artists Depository no. 21 Charlotte St., Fitzroy Square, London.’, engraving (in very poor condition), in a maple frame, the backboard extensively inscribed in ink by George Harnage confirming his witnessing of the hurricane which wreaked havoc on the ships anchored in the harbour on Sept. 21st and 22nd 1819.

The lot is accompanied with a letter of verification from the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, dated 6 October 1972, together with biographical information
