Other notes: Works by Rochus van Veen rarely appear on the market; van Veen specialised in natural history subjects such as insects, birds and funghi.
Rochus van Veen was a member of the family of Otto van Veen who was Rubens's first master, and he was also the brother of Gerardus van Veen (circa 1620-1683) who also specialised in painting fish and birds. He was celebrated enough for Houbraken to include him in his Lives of the Netherlandish Painters (1721 edition, Volume 3, p.309).
