S. Lichtenstein, Manchester - A Victorian silver 'Goliath' open faced chronograph pocket watch and chain

circa 1890, the cream coloured dial, unsigned but marked 'Centre Seconds Chronograph', 55mm diameter, with black Roman numerals gold coloured spade and fleur-de-lys hands, blued centre sweep, chemin de fer chapter ring and outer timing track, signed mechanical key wind movement number 110453, with rose gold coloured start/stop slider at 2 o'clock, case, 63mm diameter, by Isaac Jabez Theo Newsom, with Chester hallmarks for Sterling silver, numbered 110453 with unmarked cuvette and milled edge, verso plain and polished with a vacant belted escutcheon shaped cartouche, gross weight 241g, presented with the winding key and attached to a base metal curb link 'Albert' chain terminating in a T bar and swivel catch. length 39cm

The use of the word 'Goliath' for an oversized pocket watch with a dial of 60mm or larger was a trademark used and registered originally by the Omega watch company in 1892. They had produced two 8 day movements and the larger movements required a larger case.

The term 'Goliath' is now widely accepted as a description of any pocket watch with a diameter of 60mm or more.
