A continental Jewish gragger
in the traditional style, the hollow handle with applied foliate decoration topped with a double scroll circlet, the shaft with ratchet mechanism supporting the urn shaped paddle heavily decorated to both sides with scrollwork engraving around a filled cartouche, and supporting a small bell to the end, 5.5ozt gross
Other notes: In Judaism, the gragger is used during the service for the holiday of Purim.
The Purim story features a villain called Haman. Everyone in the synagogue boos, hisses, stamps their feet and uses graggers and cymbals whenever the name of Haman is mentioned during the service. All the noise is designed to symbolically drown out his name from the story.
