Lot 183

183

A Brampton salt glazed Toby jug and lid, circa 1840

seated, holding a foaming jug of ale,
23cm high

Provenance:
Arthur Henry Sandell (1882-1966)

Arthur Sandell was a noted collector of ceramics, brasses and cigarette cards. He was clearly an able student of military matters, achieving 100% in his gunnery course work! He was also a keen and successful athlete winning many awards for running in the Bristol and Bath areas in his early years.

He spent his working life with WD and HO Wills and travelled extensively around and between Birmingham and Bristol. He assembled a diverse collection, including Toby Jugs and Stirrup Cups, all meticulously recorded in comprehensive records maintained in his tiny but highly legible handwriting. Some of the records are in shorthand, which he taught himself.

Much of his collection was in storage from the time of his death until the death of his daughter-in-law, Olive Sandell just two days short of her 100th Birthday in 2020. The collections, part of which are now offered for sale, subsequently came to light.

Sold for £140
