Liverpool born Kennion was an artist, soldier and businessman. In the 1760s he sailed to Jamaica, joining the expedition against Havana, and later managed his grandfather's estates there, ultimately becoming an aide-de-camp, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, to the Commander-in-Chief of the island. Upon his return to England he befriended the artist George Barret Snr. who he accompanied on sketching tours.
