This bust probably represents one Thomas Clark, on account of the inscribed date 1850, for he exhibited such an item in the Royal Academy in 1850, under no. 1405 (Algernon Graves,The Royal Academy of Art, a Complete Dictionary of Contributors and their Works…, London, 1905-6, p. 332 (untraced).
Known as John Kirk of Dumfries (b. 1832- d. post-1854), the sculptor went to the R.A. Schools in 1847 and won a silver medal for a model in the following year. In 1850, he was working at the Birmingham School of Design. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1847-54 and the British Institution, 1849-54.
