with indigo spine and stripes pattern on saffron background, cotton warp, wool weft and organic dyes, 104 x 166cm
Used by Lamas and closely associated with the practice of tantric meditation, the tiger rug has its origins in depictions of wrathful Buddhist deities clad in tigerskin loincloths and is believed to offer protection from vengeful spirits during meditation. Designs of tiger rugs range from realistic mimicry of pelts to more stylised and abstracted renderings.
