Three silver gelatin photographs of Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis, 1964

taken by David Ormsby-Gore, 5th Baron Harlech, the former UK Ambassador, at his residence in Washinton D.C.
50 x 22cm

Captured a year after the assassination of JFK, the present images show Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis in the swimming pool of the UK Ambassador's residence in Washington D.C..David Ormsby-Gore, also known at this time as Lord Harlech, was Britain's top diplomat in Washington between 1961 and 1965 and played a key role in the Kennedy administration as foreign policy adviser and helped in discussions of Vietnam and nuclear disarmament. In 2017, the BBC revealed letters between Onassis and Ormsby-Gore that appear to confirm rumours of a long suspected love affair between the two. It is understood that in 1967, Ormsby-Gore proposed marriage to Kennedy Onassis, but she declined, instead marrying Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis just a year later.
