William Gray, Mid Calder, Scotland - A Victorian silver open-faced pocket watch

c1884, the unsigned white dial, 45mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, gold coloured spade hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, signed front loading key wind mechanical fusée movement number 23201, additionally marked 'Mid Calder' with engraved balance cock under a brass dust cover, case, 50mm diameter with London hallmarks for Sterling silver numbered 207 12, verso plain with a belted and vacant escutcheon shaped cartouche, gross weight 119.5g and presented with the winding key

William Gray was a Scottish watchmaker, born in 1823, and worked in the town of Mid Calder, about 15 miles west of Edinburgh where he lived with his wife, 14 years his junior, and 4 children.
