The date of 1826 indicates this to be an early work by Muschi, painted in her mid-twenties. The artist was a noted copyist of Old Masters, principally based in Rome. She married fellow painter Abraham Teerlink (1776-1857) in 1836.

Muschi would have seen Correggio’s original in the Uffizi, Florence, where it still remains.
