each with a central rubover set oval cabochon grey star sapphire, displaying asterism under strong light, approximately 8.8 x 7.7mm, flanked by a rubover set baguette cut diamond, estimated total approximate weight 0.15ct, peg and scroll fittings, unmarked white metal, tested as platinum, weight 5.4g
The optical phenomenon responsible for the sapphire’s shimmering rays is called asterism, from the Latin word astrum, meaning “star.” Asterism occurs when light reflects from small needle-like inclusions within the stone. The ‘star’ appears to move over the surface of the stone when either the stone or the light source is moved.
