“The first of the potters whose friendship I made and whose pots I greatly admired was Louis Hanssen. He introduced me to a new world. Nothing gave me more pleasure than to watch Louis on the wheel. His early death meant that his work is largely forgotten, but he is very well represented in York Museum and in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Unfortunately, a large number of his pots were destroyed after his death. They appear rarely in galleries or salerooms. I hope, with the passing of time, this will change, for he was much admired in his lifetime.”

“Ursula Edgcumbe and I met through the artist Edward Wolfe. Despite a critically successful retrospective exhibition in 1936 at The Leger Gallery, she sculpted for the last time in 1938. One of the two sculptures from those years is Country Group in mahogany. In my flat it has not been possible to place it where both sides can be seen by walking around it, so I have turned it weekly for I find the back quite as beautiful as the front. After 1938 she painted and developed here own personal style and exhibited widely. But when, partly through me, partly through Michael Parkin and partly through the Fine Art Society, people became aware of her sculptures again, they were much admired. I put together, for Gillian Jason, an exhibition of both sculptures and paintings after her death. It was a combination of stone dust in her lungs and the inevitability of poor sale in the late thirties that deprived us of the long career that her talents promised.”
